A contractor in the northern province of Hai Duong has been arrested for giving drugs to his workers as payment.
Bui Van Lam, 32, was arrested for illegal drug trafficking, Hai Duong police said Friday.
Authorities said Lam directs more than 20 workers from the northern mountainous regions to Hai Duong to work on construction sites in industrial parks, for VND300,000 ($12.20) a day.
As half of the workers were considered drug addicts, Lam said he would give them medicine at VND100,000 per pack, and that money would be subtracted from their salaries at the end of each month.
A search of an apartment in Nam Sach district rented by Lam revealed 12 paper packets and a plastic bag containing about 2.2 grams of the drug.
