After bringing the first consumer smartphone with an under-screen camera, ZTE is preparing to showcase its second-generation implementation at the upcoming MWC in Shanghai. The conference is February 23-25, and ZTE’s Axon 30 Pro could very well be the device to showcase the new UD development.

The news was announced via a Weibo message by ZTE Chairman of Mobile Devices Ni Fei and also mentions that ZTE will showcase the world’s first under-screen 3D structured light technology. It remains to be seen how this implementation will be used, but there are implications that it may help with more precise facial scanning. The position also ranks first for ZTE in terms of pending patents in China.

The Axon 30 Pro is expected to be ZTE 2021’s flagship with Samsung’s S5KGND 200MP sensor which has yet to be announced. The big question, however, is whether ZTE managed to improve the UD camera image quality after the Axon 20 5G’s sub-par output. The Snapdragon 888 is also on the menu depending on the leaks. We’ll surely have more details on next week’s ZTE event, so stay tuned.
