Windows 11 is an upcoming operating system that is set to replace Windows 10. PC owners are now wondering what will happen to their devices if they don’t upgrade.

    Upgrading to Windows 11

Windows 11 is scheduled for release this August, but Microsoft stated that users could stick to their Windows 10 OS until October 14, 2025, according to PCGamer.

Once the Windows 11 OS starts rolling out, users will have the option to accept the upgrade or decline it. If the user decides to decline the offer to upgrade, they won’t see any prompt on their screens until 2025.

Microsoft will keep supporting Windows 10 until 2025, and users can still use Windows 10 safely on their PC while expecting constant security upgrades.

However, after October 14, 2025, using the Windows 10 OS will be risky. That is because Microsoft will no longer release any updates for the Windows 10 OS. If someone discovers a vulnerability in Windows 10, Microsoft won’t release an update to fix it.

Will Windows 10 Stop Working After Windows 11 Launch?

When the Windows 11 OS launches, users will still be able to use Windows 10 as they normally do now. The OS will not stop working, according to The Verge.

Microsoft will offer users a chance to upgrade their OS early for free from within the Windows Update feature in Settings. As soon as Windows 10 expires in 2025, it will still work, but you may face a greater security risk.

What If You Can’t Upgrade to Windows 11?

According to How to Geek, if your PC is no ready for the Windows 11 upgrade, you still have a few options that you can try. The safest option will be to purchase a newer PC before 2025. That way, you will be running the latest Windows OS.

Another option is to keep using Windows 10, although it may come with significant security risks.

What If You Keep Using Windows 10?

Every time Microsoft updates the Windows OS, some users prefer to stick to the older version since they are more familiar with it and are worried that it will change the settings on their PC.

In fact, there are still users who are running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows XP. However, those users are facing security risks every day.

As for Windows 10 users, although you will be facing risks, if you practice good security hygiene, you will have a better chance at running the OS without issues until 2025.

So what can you do to stay safe online while still using your Windows 10 OS?

The most crucial step to keep your OS clean is to update your web browser regularly. You will also need to make sure that all of your applications are updated.

Do not visit any suspicious sites while you are online, use a secure password, and do not re-use your passwords as much as possible. Also, make sure that your anti-malware software on your PC is updated.

If possible, use two-factor authentication and keep frequent backups, including offline ones. Before opening an email attachment, make sure it is from a legit source, and do not run programs that you downloaded from the internet unless it is from a verified source.
