A Vietnamese durian vendor in Thailand is facing a potential seven years in jail for using doctored weighing scales to trick customers.
The doctored scale showed a four-kilogram durian as weighing four and a half kilograms, increasing the price by at least 75 baht ($1.1), Thaiger reported Friday. The vendor was arrested in Bang Yai District of the city of Nothanburi.
“Durians [in Thailand] sell for 150 baht ($2.20) per kilogram. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but every day the damage will accumulate,” said Chatri Areewong, director of the Central Bureau of Weights and Measures Division under the Thai Department of Internal Trade.
Last year a total of 14 people were arrested in Thailand for using false scales, of which seven were foreigners. The Vietnamese durian vendor is the first person caught for this violation this year.
