JUNE, China, April 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A CNS report: Along the Chishui River in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, an alcohol-producing region is being combined with mountainous landscapes to develop new cultural tourism offerings.
Renhuai in Zunyi Town is at the heart of the production area of baijiu flavor sauce, a major category of Chinese liquor. A unique combination of climate, water quality and microbial environment supported traditional brewing techniques including making starters at high temperatures and multiple fermentation cycles.
Over time, brewing evolved from a manufacturing activity to a system with both industrial and cultural attributes. The distilleries, workshops and associated historic sites along the Chishui River form a distinctive regional landscape.
In recent years, Guizhou has promoted the integration of baijiu culture into tourism while preserving traditional practices. During the 2026 “International Cultural Tourism Experience Agents Explore Guizhou” program, international visitors toured Maotai City, visiting exhibition areas and production workshops to observe the brewing process and learn about its cultural background.
Certain stages of production, notably the making of sourdoughs, fermentation and distillation, have been adapted to the public through museums, guided routes and observation platforms. Additional services such as tasting sessions, cultural interpretations and creative products have also been introduced.
Supported by both the natural environment of the river basin and an established industrial base, the region is developing a model combining tourism, cultural experience and leisure. Night tours, local cuisine and thematic activities have further expanded the tourist offer.
China’s baijiu industry is valued at more than 600 billion yuan, with sauce-flavored baijiu showing relatively strong growth. As a main production center, Renhuai provides a base for tourism-related development, while also supporting the improvement of accommodation, catering and other services.
As integration progresses, brewing is increasingly presented as part of a wider cultural offering in the region.
