The Ho Chi Minh City education department has proposed local students switch to online classes starting May 10 on the back of rising coronavirus fears, VNExpress reported.
Duong Tri Dung, deputy director of the municipal Department of Education and Training, on Wednesday said it had proposed to shorten the current curriculum by 10 days, with subjects yet to be covered taught online instead.

The department has also requested all schools to finish their final exams before May 9, about two weeks earlier than planned. Online study should be conducted so the school year would complete by the end of May as originally scheduled, it added.
Nguyen Van Hieu, another deputy director of the HCMC education department, said if the current coronavirus situation stabilizes, schools could resume their original roadmap for the school year.
HCMC’s move would follow 18 other cities and provinces that have allowed students to stay home as new coronavirus outbreaks since last week sparked 64 community transmissions in 10 localities: Hanoi, Da Nang and HCMC and the provinces of Ha Nam, Vinh Phuc, Hung Yen, Quang Nam, Dong Nai, Hai Duong, and Yen Bai.
HCMC has recorded only one Covid-19 case during the new wave so far.
The southern metropolis currently has around 1.7 million students up to high school level, according to VNExpress.
