Nintendo Reveals That 20% of Switch Units Sold Last Year Were to Homes Which ALREADY Had One

Nintendo knows very well how successful the Switch has been for the company. And according to official numbers released by Nintendo themselves, it seemed like people just can’t get enough of their handheld console.

According to a report by GameSpot, around 20% of all Nintendo Switch sales last year were sold to customers who already had one. This was revealed in a latest earnings call, which also showed that the company managed to sell a massive 28 million units in the past fiscal year.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa further states that the company expects demand for multiple systems per household to increase, as reported on Nintendo Life. Interestingly, this has been the company’s actual business plan for a while now, which was first announced in 2018 during the tenure of former Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima.

With these sales numbers, it’s no wonder why total hardware shipments for the Switch just surpassed the 84 million barrier, which experts believe could also go past the 100 million units mark way faster than Nintendo’s own Wii console and the PlayStation 4.

Why is the Switch so Popular These Days?

The most obvious answer would be that Sony and Microsoft aren’t really doing well in terms of console supplies. The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S have both been very hard to come by; sometimes even almost impossible to buy. This is why Xbox and PS5 restock trackers have been popping up all over the web.

As for the less obvious answer, it seems like Nintendo is pressing all the right buttons when it comes to marketing the Switch. When it released back in 2017, the Switch was hailed as one of the best handheld gaming consoles of its generation. And it seemed like the hype didn’t die there. Fans loved the Switch so much that they were eventually clamoring for an upgraded model: a theoretical Nintendo Switch Pro.

No official announcement has been made about the Switch Pro, though numerous rumors have popped up saying that it’s only a matter of time before Nintendo reveals the console. As such, Nintendo’s show at this year’s E3 is one of the most hyped up presentations in recent memory. Just imagine if they do showcase more information about Breath of the Wild 2 and then announce the Switch Pro: the internet world will shake.

    Keeping Up With Demand

Furukawa claims that the Switch still has a lot left in it, as it’s currently at the middle of its life cycle. Despite that, sales for the handheld aren’t slowing down, with Nintendo expecting to sell a further 25 million Switch units until the end of the current fiscal year in March 2022. If it does hit that mark within the time frame, then the Switch will finally pass the Wii for total units sold in its lifetime.
