Netflix and Sony Could Partner Up for New Gaming Service Next Year

Netflix had been vocal about its plans of diving into the world of video games in the past. Now, the streaming service has announced that it would expand to game content, as well as movies and TV for its platform.

However, a recent data mine suggests that a partnership between Netflix and Sony could bring the biggest PlayStation brands into the streaming service in some form.

    Netflix and Sony Team Up

According to VGC, a data miner named Steve Moser have discovered numerous Sony PlayStation brand imagery and content in the Netflix platform’s code.

Moser shared the leak through Twitter. He also attached images of both the “Ghost of Tsushima” box art and PS5 controllers. It is unclear what this means for Netflix, but it could hint at a partnership between the streaming service and PlayStation, with “Ghost of Tsushima” content in the works.

Moser revealed that the gaming section of Netflix has the codename Shark. He also showed the placement of PlayStation IP within the system that suggests a collaborative approach, according to IGN.

This is not the first deal between the two major companies, as both Netflix and Sony agreed on a deal earlier this year that Sony Picture Entertainment movies will be available to Netflix right after their theatrical run.

Also, earlier this year, Netflix was reportedly looking to hire an expert in gaming content, and it is speculated that the said expert will be the one to lead its gaming division.

On July 15, it was confirmed that Netflix hired ex-EA and Facebook Gaming Executive Mike Verdu.

    Netflix’s Jump into Gaming

Netflix has experimented with interactive stories on its platform through productions such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: The Movie” and “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” which let users choose how they want the storyline to go.

However, the company has yet to release a full video game content, and it is not known what Verdu will do as his exact role has not been disclosed yet.

Meanwhile, Sony has also been vocal about wanting to expand its franchises outside of gaming. The latest gaming franchise “The Last of Us,” was just adapted by HBO, and it will star Pedro Pascal. “Ghost of Tsushima” will be adapted into a full-length feature film.

Future Video Game Content on Netflix

Since there are a lot of PlayStation games that are narrative-driven, it is possible to adapt them into movies and TV series.

While PlayStation already has a game-streaming service called PlayStation Now, it could be looking to push gaming content beyond the PlayStation console ecosystem, just like what Microsoft has done with Xbox Game Pass.

Netflix has a list of upcoming video game content, with the release of “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness” on the platform and the renewal of shows such as “The Witcher,” which is an “Assassin’s Creed” adaptation, and “Sonic Prime,” the streaming service may release more in the near feature.

The exact date of the Netflix Gaming service is still unknown, but based on gathered leaks posted by the data miners, it is possible that it will be released in early 2022.
