It was Diego Maradona who brought Napoli from the relegation to the top of Italian soccer and also top of the European soccer. It was Diego Maradona who was the most prestigious captain in the history of Napoli. And it was Diego Maradona who was honored as the best and forever only number 10 of Napoli. Therefore, as a tribune for the death of the former remarkable captain, Napoli stadium finally changed its name to Diego Armando Maradona.
Maradona played for the Azzurri from 1984 through 1991 and led them to several trophies, including 2 domestic Serie A achievements. News about changing the name of Napoli stadium to Diego Armando Maradona has been popularized since two weeks ago. Naples mayor Luigi de Magistris worked with Napoli club in order to fulfill the necessary documents. And after finalizing everything, the club can change its stadium’s name officially.
Talking on Reuters, the president of Napoli – Aurelio de Laurentiis – proposed his respect to Maradona, and he said that if he could do something, he would build a whole new stadium so that the name of Maradona would be named for it.
The president of the club also admitted that in the last 17 years, he has been in talks with the mayor of the city and the government in order to change the name of the stadium San Paolo.
“If then, for tradition, we will need to call it both ‘San Paolo’ and ‘Maradona’ so be it. It won’t change much, but it’s only right that Maradona has this recognition. Even if we were to build a whole new stadium, I would name it like that,” Laurentiis said.
Napoli will play in the rename stadium officially from next week Thursday when they have a clash against Real Sociedad in Dec. 10.
