Microsoft Teams with Clippy, the original virtual assistant of the messaging software, comes back after it was removed 20 years ago. However, the new version will not be as useful as its previous model.

The tech giant creator explained that its remodeled Microsoft Clippy is released to lighten up the software’s video calls or virtual meetings. This means that Clippy’s main purpose is not actually to act as a virtual assistant.

It was remodeled as Microsoft Teams’ background display. To simplify it, the new Microsoft Clippy is not actually functioning, unlike its recent model. The virtual assistant will act as an endless Office ribbon image.

“After well over a year of remote and hybrid work we could all use some excitement on video calls, we asked our designers to give a few memorable Microsoft moments their debut as Microsoft Teams backgrounds,” explained Microsoft via its official blog post.

Microsoft Teams With Clippy Is Also Joined By New Features

According to ZDNet’s latest report, Microsoft Clippy is not the only one that received a new look. Microsoft also confirmed that the “Msft_Nostalgia” background bundle of Microsoft Teams has also returned.

This feature includes Paint, Landscape, and Solitaire. The tech giant manufacturer claimed that each of these virtual displays can become popular background during virtual meetings.

“In 1996, Charles O’Rear took a photograph in the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area of California’s Wine Country. Microsoft bought the rights to the stunning image, Bliss, and eventually chose it as the default wallpaper for Windows XP, which was released nearly two decades ago in 2001,” said Microsoft.

The software provider added that billions of people are already familiar with the Windows XP display. Going back to Microsoft Clippy, the company said that it already tried several times to return its popular virtual assistant.

One of these instances was way back in 2019 when Microsoft tried to experiment with an animated pack of its Microsoft Clippy stickers for Teams software.

Microsoft’s Other Innovations

Aside from the Clippy rework, Microsoft is also working on its Windows 11, the latest computer system of the company. Windows Latest reported that the software’s SKUs could soon have dark mode by default. 

Microsoft explained that it decided to work on this feature since most people spend too much time in front of their bright PC screens, especially since most of its consumers are conducting remote works.
