Joe Gomez fears that he could stay out for the rest of this season because of a serious knee injury. The defender potential will also miss Euro 2021.
In Wednesday’s training with England national team, Joe Gomez suffered a knee injury. The 23-year-old defender is afraid that he would miss the rest of the season and Euro 2021. Gomez was back with his club Liverpool, and he was going through the examination before disclosing the full damage.
The young defender also missed the World Cup 2018 tournament because of injury.
Nick Pope, Gomez’s teammate in the England national team, suggested that the team wasn’t easy with Gomez’s pain.
‘He made a pass or a movement with no-one around him and ended up on the floor, obviously in distress or in pain,” Pope said. “As a football player being on the pitch you know when something doesn’t seem right so you could see he was in a great deal of pain. When you see one of your friends or teammates go through that it’s not easy so it wasn’t easy for me or any of the lads.’
Gareth Southgate, head coach of the England national team, discouraged talking about the seriousness of Gomez’s injury. The coach recommended that he would wait until Gomez finished the medical test with Liverpool. ‘I can’t tell you how serious it is because he is yet to have scans,” Southgate said.
‘What was upsetting was to see was that he was in a fair bit of pain and there was nobody around him when the injury happened. I didn’t like that element of it,” he added.

Southgate hoped that his player could come back as soon as possible. “We have to wait and see what the scans show and we are all hopeful for him that it is not what it might be. We’re hopeful for him that it’s not what it might be, but it is not a good situation.”
The injury of Gomez will likely affect Liverpool the most since the club is suffering from a defense shortage. The number one defender of The Kop, Virgil van Dijk, has already been out for the rest of this season. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho also struggled with injury problems and would be out for months. Since Joe Gomez is the newest injured case, Liverpool might have to make a defensive reinforcement in the January transfer.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s coach, hoped that the team could still play in Euros next year. “Hopefully we can play the Euros next summer but if we continue like this let’s see which players can be part of that,” Klopp said this Sunday.
The German coach is having a hard time with the defensive system of Liverpool right now. The defending champion of the English Premier League is wrestling with the defenders’ calculation, and Klopp is getting sick of it. ‘”hese kinds of things should not happen,” Liverpool’s coach said.
