Huawei has suffered a lot from the various US government bans and as a result we’ve seen the company diversify its product portfolio a bit, with a lot more emphasis on wearable devices and audio accessories in recent months, for example.
Now, a new report claims Huawei plans to make electric cars under its own brand, and some models may even launch before the end of this year. Apparently, the company has already started designing electric vehicles in-house and approaching suppliers.
Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, who was in charge of the company’s incredible rise in the smartphone world, would focus on electric vehicles, which will target the mass market segment, which implies that they will have a reasonable price.
Huawei is reportedly in talks with Changan Automobile, a state-owned entity in China, as well as BAIC Group’s BluePark New Energy Technology and other automakers, to use their auto factories to manufacture its electric vehicles.
That said, a Huawei spokesperson denied plans to design electric vehicles or produce Huawei-branded vehicles, saying “Huawei is not an automobile manufacturer. However, through ICT (information and communication technologies), we aim to be a supplier of components, enabling automotive suppliers (original equipment manufacturers) to build better vehicles ”.
