What about iOS 16.4, which will be released next week at the earliest? Once a new security update is added. This is one of the reasons why you should install 16.4 immediately. Beyond that, however, iOS 16.4 includes a host of other improvements that will affect the way you use your iPhone. The following three are representative.
new house architecture
Apple first unveiled the new home architecture in iOS 16.2, but stopped rolling it out after a few days as several users had issues with the update. Then, a few months later, it was added back in iOS 16.4. There are no new features added to the new architecture. Instead, the Home app and the underlying part of HomeKit have been completely redeveloped to improve efficiency, stability, and speed. Some users may have already upgraded before Apple stopped distribution last December, but this new upgrade makes things even smoother.
Once you’ve updated to iOS 16.4, open the Home app, tap the “…” button in the top right corner, and select Home Settings. An update notification will appear at the top of the screen. All other Apple devices should also be updated, especially devices that act as home hubs, such as Apple TV and HomePod.
new emoji
There’s probably no one who doesn’t like emojis. iOS 16.4 adds 21 new emojis. Considering the change in skin color, we can say that there are 31 types. The new emojis are:
- heart : Blue, Pink, Gray
- smiley : face shaking emoji
- gesture : There are 5 skin tones with this emoji of sliding your hand left and right.
- animal : donkey, moose, goose, wings, jellyfish
- nature : Hyacinth, bean pod, ginger
- article : flute, hair stick, maracas, fan
- symbol : Kanda, wireless
Web App Push Notifications
One of the long-standing issues with “web apps” is that they don’t support push notifications. A web app is adding the web to the home screen as if it were an app. However, starting with iOS 16.4, web apps added to the home screen can use the standard HTML5 web push API. In other words, it becomes possible to send a notification or display a badge icon. Of course, the web app must ask the user’s permission, and the user can decide how to notify the web app in Settings > Notifications. However, this feature only works with apps that the user has added to the home screen.
