Wednesday a report from 9to5Google drew attention to a feature in Wear OS that hasn’t worked for months, according to a Google Issue Tracking thread. Google has now responded that it is “aware of the problems encountered by some users”. Google also said it will “address these issues and improve the overall experience” with its OEM partners.
Using the “Hey Google” keyword should invoke the Google Assistant on a Wear OS smartwatch when the screen is active. However, despite the feature enabled in the wizard settings, it will not respond to a command. You can still call up Google Assistant by long pressing the watch button, but Wear OS is intended to be able to give the Assistant a command with the word wake up.

Wear OS has so much potential, and there are dozens of attractive smartwatches launching each year that sport the platform. It seems these OEMs are at the mercy of Google for really putting effort behind the portable operating system.
Wear OS’s latest H MR1 update is based on Android 9 Pie, but Google is expected to release a new Android 11-based update this year. With the acquisition of Fitbit by Google a few weeks ago, the company may be in the process of bringing its new assets into the next Wear OS update.
