Elon Musk has just filed a new trademark for a Tesla restaurant service, a sign that the company might actually be finally gearing up to go into another industry. The idea was actually concocted by CEO Elon Musk as well as a number of company executives ever since at least 2017.
Elon Musk Files Trademark
The company has applied for three different trademarks that would cover these different categories namely pop-up restaurant services, self-service restaurant services, take-out restaurant services, and other basic restaurant services. The trademark was filed on May 27 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as was initially reported by Electrek.
The trademark application is currently awaiting examination and will also be reviewed by an attorney this coming August 27. One curious question that Tesla fans might be asking is how does going into the restaurant industry fit into the company being a luxury EV company?
The answer according to an article by TechCrunch is that the answer can be found back in 2017 when the previous CTO JB Straubel noted at a FSTEC restaurant-technology conference that the company could move into the restaurant business in the future. The idea was basically to turn the EV charging stations into actual full-service convenience stores which would serve food.
Tesla has already tried out a smaller scale version of the general idea by creating lounges just like the one at the company’s Kettleman City, California Supercharger station. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has then expanded upon the whole convenience store idea and even tossed out on Twitter a restaurant concept that would put an old-school drive-in restaurant at one of the company’s Supercharger locations in LA.

Food and Automobile Concept
Just a few months later, the company did in fact apply for an official restaurant and supercharge station but has also been a bit quiet about the whole potential of the business venture ever since. The company did not respond to requests for more information as to Tesla’s plans to open up the Tesla Restaurant Charging Station.
The iconic Tesla “T” logo is also featured on the USTPO application for use by restaurants. The company had also applied for trademarks for the Tesla word itself and even a sort of stylized version of the word. With the filing, it might look like Tesla could be taking other needed steps to move forward as Elon Musk planned to create a Sonic-meets-fueling station.
It is also not the very first time in which the restaurant industry has collided with the auto industry. The Michelin Guide was originally compiled back in 1900 by brothers Edouard and Andre Michelin who wanted to create a greater demand for automobiles along with the tires that they manufactured. This is why the company decided to create an extensive guide of hotels, restaurants, and even mechanics and gas stations located along the way.
