The case was dropped as police investigated and found the phones had been accidentally left behind by a delivery man, surnamed Liu, the previous day before being thrown into bins in the siblings’ residential block by a woman cleaner who tried to unseal the box. but failed, according to the South China Morning Post.
Liu said he placed a total of 50 iPhones, contained in five boxes, on top of the bins while organizing his packages, but forgot to retrieve them afterwards. It wasn’t until the next day that he realized he had lost the phones.
According to Liu, he was paralyzed by the thought that he could never make enough money to compensate for the phones, which were worth a total of 350,000 yuan (about $49,000).
The couple have been praised for their honesty since their story was posted on online communities and went viral. “They literally saved the life of the delivery man,” commented a user.
