You can reset the password of your income tax portal profile using these three routes:
1) OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar
2) Upload Digital Signature Certificate
3) Use e-filing OTP
How to reset password using Aadhaar OTP
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing homepage and click Login.
Step 2: Enter your User ID and click Continue.
Step 3: On the Login screen, click the Forgot Password option under Secure Access Message.

Step 4: On the Forgot Password page, click Continue after entering your user ID in the Enter User ID textbox.

Step 5: On the Select an Option to Reset Password page, select your Aadhaar OTP option

Note: If you already have an Aadhaar OTP
- Select I already have OTP on my Aadhaar-registered cellphone number
- Enter the 6-digit OTP
- Click on Continue
Step 6: Select Generate OTP, and click Continue.
Step 7: On the Verify Your Identity page, select the Declaration checkbox and click Generate Aadhaar OTP.

Step 8: Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar in Enter the OTP textbox and click Verify.
Note:
- The OTP will only be valid for 15 minutes.
- You have three chances to type in the correct OTP.
- The screen’s OTP expiry countdown timer indicates when the OTP will expire.
- A new OTP will be generated and sent when you click Resend OTP.
Step 9: Enter a new password in the and Confirm Password, then click Submit.

- Keep in mind the password guideline while creating your new password: it should be at least 8 characters long and no more than 14 characters long.
- Both uppercase and lowercase letters should be included.
- It should have a number in it.
- It should have a special character (e.g. @#$%).
Along with a Transaction ID, a success message is displayed. Please keep the Transaction ID on hand for future use.
How to reset income tax portal password using e-filing OTP
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing homepage and click Login.
Step 2: E your User ID and click Continue.
Step 3: On the Login screen, click the Forgot Password option under Secure Access Message.
Step 4: Select an Option to Reset Password page, select Use e-filing OTP and click Continue.

Step 5: Select Date of birth as per the format on the Reset Password using e-Filing OTP page and click Continue.
Step 6: Enter the two 6-digit OTPs sent to your registered cellphone number and email address, then click Verify.

Step 7: Enter a new password in the Set New Password and Confirm Password and click submit
Along with a Transaction ID, a success message is displayed. Please keep the Transaction ID on hand for future reference.
How to reset password using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing homepage and click Login.
Step 2: Enter your User ID and click Continue.
Step 3: On the Login screen, click the Forgot Password option under Secure Access Message.
Step 4: On the Select an Option to Reset Password page, select Upload Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and click Continue

Step 5: Select the appropriate option and click Continue
Note:
- Select Registered DSC if you already have a DSC on the e-Filing portal.
- Select New DSC if you do not have a DSC registered on the e-Filing portal.
Step 6: Select ‘Click here to download emsigner utility’.
Step 7: Select ‘I have downloaded and installed emsigner utility’ and click ‘Continue’ when the download and installation of emsigner utility is complete.

Step 8: Select your Provider, Certificate, and Provider Password on the Data Sign screen. To sign, click the Sign button.

Step 9: Enter new password in Set New Password and Confirm and click Submit.
