On the occasion of the 17th annual United Nations Chinese Language Day, the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, in partnership with China Media Group, presents “Brilliant Civilizations of the Chinese Language.”
This international event on April 13, 2026 will celebrate the rich cultural heritage and global importance of the Chinese language.
United Nations Chinese Language Day, established by the United Nations in 2010, is celebrated annually on April 20 in honor of Cang Jie, the legendary figure credited with creating Chinese characters. The date corresponds to the traditional Chinese solar term “Grain Rain” (Guyu), highlighting the deep cultural roots and historical legacy of one of the world’s oldest writing systems.
With over a billion native speakers, Mandarin Chinese has the distinction of being one of the six official languages of the United Nations since 1946. Chinese plays a vital role in promoting multilingualism and cultural diversity on global platforms.
Mandarin Chinese is attracting growing interest around the world as a unique force for understanding, writing and expressing reality. This brings societies together and creates a spirit of friendship. The United Nations Chinese Language Day creates a platform for dialogue and promotes mutual learning, cultural exchanges and global cooperation.
Mandarin Chinese is not only a communication tool, but also a bond that strengthens friendships and opens doors to new career paths and a better understanding of Chinese civilization for countless students.
The event at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday will feature speeches from prominent diplomats and language experts, as well as classical music performances celebrating Chinese artistic traditions.
“Brilliant Chinese Language Civilizations” is a proud reminder of the enduring influence of the Chinese language throughout history and its vital role today in promoting communication and cultural exchange around the world.
