Apple, Samsung Allow LG Users to Trade-In Their Smartphones for iPhone or Galaxy Device in South Korea

LG users could get an upgrade from their current smartphones, but not from the same brand — as it has stopped manufacturing phones. It could be an Apple or Samsung instead.

LAS VEGAS, NV – JANUARY 06: Attendees walk through the LG booth at CES 2016 at the Las Vegas Convention Center on January 6, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. CES, the world’s largest annual consumer technology trade show, runs through January 9 and is expected to feature 3,600 exhibitors showing off their latest products and services to more than 150,000 attendees.

The tech giants are now running a trade-in program in South Korea that allows LG phones to be given in exchange for their flagship lineup, GizmoChina reported.

It has been a month since LG had to let go of its smartphone ambitions. The South Korean company has completely bid farewell to the said business line. Instead, it is eyeing smart home devices, robotics, artificial intelligence, and even 6G.

Apple and Samsung Filling the Market Gap

And now, Apple and Samsung, which also a South Korea-based tech company, are attempting to get a slice of the market share that LG is abandoning, as per ZDNet.

The program will let LG users give out their phones in exchange for flagship phones by the two tech giants. However, LG users will then have to add some cash based on the price of the iPhone or Galaxy phone. They will have to minus it to the value of their old device.

    Apple Trade-In Program

For Apple, the program will be available until September 25. Either 4G or 5G LG phones could be presented in exchange for an iPhone 12 or an iPhone 12 Mini, whichever is preferred by the buyer.

However, the catch is, the promo will only be exclusive to telecom companies that retail the said devices. The Apple Store, or any authorized resellers of iPhones, will not have the trade-in program.

    Samsung Trade-In Program

Samsung, likewise, will allow LG smartphones to be exchanged for Galaxy S21, Galaxy Note 20 devices, or even the Galaxy Z Flip. Yet again — it depends on the preference of the customer.

In contrast to Apple, however, the program of Samsung will only last until the end of June. But extensions may still be possible. Even more so since the Cupertino giant, which it considers as its greatest rival, will have the promo until September.

    LG Smartphone’s Demise

Many where suprised when LG officially announced the end of its smartphone line in April 2020.

Fans of LG awaiting its rollable phone have been left hanging in the air as it had to be canceled. Similarly, Samsung is also teasing a phone with a display that rolls horizontally.

Furthermore, back when LG was still part of the smartphone market, it was heralded as the “Most Green Eco-Friendly Company” in the United States.

The bright side for its users is the promise of LG to provide at least three years of Android updates for its smartphones. But some may now opt to upgrade their phones with another brand.
