A report from Nikkei Asia suggests that Apple and TSMC are both working on advanced OLED displays for its supposed AR and VR devices. The hardware is currently in the testing phase at Apple’s office in Longtan Science Park, near TSMC’s test plant in the region.

There are a few takeaways from the report. First, the OLED panels will be built using TSMC’s current chip production equipment and will not require such a large investment in R&D. Second, the OLED displays will be integrated directly on the chip for improved efficiency and to save internal space. Finally, Apple reportedly hired the best talent from screen maker AU Optronics to work on said 1-inch screens.
The source also reveals Apple’s plans to develop microLED displays with Epistar to power its future Apple Watches, iPads and MacBooks.
