AMD has been preparing its direct competitor to NVIDIA’s DLSS for a while now, but maybe this is the one.

TweakTown reports that AMD recently filed a patent for what they call “gaming super resolution.” Based on the name alone, it might be safe to say that this is Team Red’s direct answer to NVIDIA’s amazing DLSS (deep-learning supersampling) tech, which was introduced in the first generation RTX graphics cards back in 2018.
Initially thought to be named FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), this apparent AMD version of supersampling AA tech doesn’t seem to necessarily mention that it’s AI-powered. Its direct competitor is, but GSR seems to run on something else other than AI.
PCGamer reported that the patent, however, was actually filed way back in 2019. This likely gave AMD enough time to make sure that this tech, unlike NVIDIA’s, would literally work on anything from Team Red, provided that it’s modern. That means Ryzen CPUs, Radeon GPUs, and custom-made chips for next-gen consoles.

Is It Going To Be Better Than DLSS?
According to the patent, AMD seems confident that it would produce better results than DLSS, which is already an amazing supersampling tech in its own right.

Gaming Super Resolution uses both linear and non-linear rendering to produce more accurate images, according to a report on Tom’s Hardware. In comparison, DLSS only uses linear rendering to upscale images, which can actually result in lost color and detail due to the AI having to “guess” more than it needs to. GSR doesn’t seem to have the same limitation, at least according to the patent.
But perhaps the biggest difference here is that Gaming Super Resolution tech doesn’t seem to rely on AI. One can assume that this is the main reason why GSR won’t be specific to specific hardware, because all that deep-learning tech requires a dedicated hardware infrastructure.
AMD To Take Over The Industry With GSR?
With Gaming Super Resolution planned to be more widely available than DLSS, this opens up basically the entire gaming hardware market to Team Red. You will not need to buy an expensive high-end graphics card like an RX 6700 XT to enjoy high-resolution gaming with barely any performance hits, for instance.

Also, it’s worth noting that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X both feature strictly AMD hardware in them. If Sony and Microsoft continue to look to Team Red to power their consoles for the foreseeable future, then GSR is going to make next-gen games look pretty amazing.
What’s Next?
For now, Gaming Super Resolution’s performance benefits still remain to be seen pending its release. Maybe it will actually be named FidelityFX by then, too. But one thing is for certain: NVIDIA will have to play hardball and further improve DLSS if it wants to stay in the game. Otherwise, AMD will undoubtedly dominate the gaming world in a flash.
