Small and medium-sized businesses, non-profit organizations and high schools are invited to submit their applications by June 23, 2024 deadline
ABU DHABIUnited Arab Emirates, December 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Zayed Prize for Sustainable Development, the UAE’s pioneering global sustainable development and humanitarian prize, has officially announced that the 2025 cycle is now open for applications.
Submissions will be accepted until June 23, 2024 via the Prize online portal. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), non-profit organizations (NPOs), and high schools offering sustainable solutions are invited to submit an application for consideration in one of six categories Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools.
Commenting on the launch of the 2025 submission cycle, HE Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al JaberMinister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates, Director General of the Zayed Prize for Sustainable Development, and COP28 The President said: “Since 2008, the Zayed Prize for Sustainable Development has honored Sheikh Zayed’s legacy in promoting inclusive sustainable and humanitarian development around the world. In this decisive decade for climate change, these values are more important than ever. I am optimistic that the Prize will contribute to global climate action in line with the UAE Consensus, which will pave the way for an effective response to the Global Stocktake Decision.
In response to the pressing climate crisis and to further support the UAE’s efforts to accelerate the practical solutions needed to drive climate action and improve vulnerable communities across the world, the Prize has increased its funding from the United States. In the Global High Schools category, divided into six regions around the world, each school is eligible to $150,000 to start or further develop their project. The most recent winners of the Zayed Prize for Sustainable Development were recognized at an awards ceremony held at the COP28 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.
To encourage a wider range of organizations and secondary schools to participate, the Prize will accept applications in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese. This will ensure that innovative solutions from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds can be recognized.
For the Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories, organizations must demonstrate that they are improving access to essential products or services in their targeted communities and are able to implement a long-term vision for better conditions of life and work. For the Global High Schools category, projects must be student-led and must demonstrate innovative approaches to addressing sustainability challenges.
The evaluation of each Prize application consists of a rigorous three-step process. Firstly, due diligence is carried out on all applications to ensure they meet the Prize’s assessment criteria: impact, innovation and inspiration. This identifies qualified applications and results in the selection of eligible candidates. Then, evaluations are undertaken by a selection committee composed of panels of independent international experts by category. From this shortlist of candidates, the finalists are chosen and then sent to the Prize Jury who will unanimously elect the winners in the six categories.
The winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize will be announced at an awards ceremony during Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Week (ADSW) 2025.
