I am married and have an eight year old daughter. My husband and I work in public institutions and lead a happy life.
We live about 150 kilometers from my in-laws. Since my father-in-law’s health deteriorated due to age, we started coming more often.
A few months ago, my husband, mother, younger brother and I visited my in-laws’ house and spent the night.
My sister-in-law called my husband a few days after this visit and told him that my younger brother had stolen several million dong (1 million VND equals $42) in cash that she had left in his wallet.
She said that no one other than my mother and my younger brother had come, and that my younger brother had taken a trip with his friend at that time, so maybe he needed the money. Everyone made him think he must have stolen it.
I felt upset because of his accusation, but I couldn’t say anything to protect my brother. I’m sure my brother never steals.
My husband didn’t know what to do either, so he remained silent. I told him that I would not let any of my family members visit his family again.
My in-laws haven’t spoken to me once since the event, although I always got on well with them.
If I don’t say anything, I risk losing the good relations with my in-laws. But I don’t have any proof either.
