The number of traffic accidents and casualties increased during the National Day holiday this year, the traffic police division announced on Monday.
During the four days from September 1 to 4, there were 125 crashes that left 76 dead and 95 injured.
Most of them occurred on roads and railways, with two train accidents killing three people, the department said.
Compared to last year, when the holiday also lasted four days from September 1 to 4, there were 46 additional accidents.
Last year, 48 people were killed – so the figure is 58% higher this year – and 51 were injured in accidents.
Also this year, traffic police officers across the country handled around 35,000 violation cases, issued total fines of VND72 billion ($2.99 million), seized 520 cars and 12,000 motorcycles and revoked 7,200 licenses.
The most common offense was drunk driving, which accounted for 9,400 cases.
Some 6,200 people were arrested for speeding.
