HONG KONG, November 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Monotype, a leading typography and technology specialist, co-hosted the TypeMeet Hong Kong event on November 15, 2023 alongside the Hong Kong Design Institute and Joint Publishing. During the event, the director of Monotype Creative Type, Akira Kobayashi, shared his typographic expertise with more than 300 participants from the design community, including corporate brands, designers, students, and font enthusiasts. The world’s leading industry expert promises to inspire the next generation of designers in Hong Kong.
Akira Kobayashi is one of the industry’s leading experts and recipient of the 2022 TDC Medal and Keinosuke Sato Price. Throughout his career, Kobayashi has designed over 50 font families, including DIN Next, Akko Pro and New Frutiger. His presence at the event gave considerable momentum to Hong Kong designers to leverage their experience in type, design and corporate branding.
During his presentation, Kobayashi emphasized the importance of a type of business that aligns with a brand’s purpose and identity. He then presented his impressive portfolio of works created for global brands such as UBS, stone bridgemoon phase, Sony, Ali Baba And Mazda. He also emphasized that a good typeface is one that serves its purpose effectively.
“The design of a typeface goes beyond its simple outline; the internal shape plays an equally important role,” explained Akira Kobayashi. “It was a pleasure to share my type design journey with the enthusiastic audience at TypeMeet Hong Kong.”
“It was an absolute pleasure to have Mr. Akira Kobayashi as a featured speaker at the 7th TypeMeet event. It is particularly significant that he was also a guest speaker at our very first TypeMeet event in 2015. Akira’s wealth of knowledge and skills in Latin characters and CJK captivated the 300 people in attendance. The Hong Kong Design Institute is honored to work with Monotype to host TypeMeet from the very beginning. Together with Monotype, we are on a mission to foster the development of type design and typography in the region,” says Keith Tamdeputy director of the Hong Kong Design Institute.
The same day, Monotype’s chief typographer and production director, Robin Hui hosted an engaging workshop. Hui was awarded the Wood Pencil at the 2022 D&AD Awards for his outstanding work with Nike and as a member of the development team for the popular Monotype font families Hei, Sung and Kai. The workshop focused on exploring traditional techniques used in creating Chinese characters, with the aim of fostering a deeper appreciation of the artistry behind Chinese character design, which was a highlight for the young design students present.
Monotype continues to lead the way in typeface and technology, providing designers and brands around the world with innovative font solutions. By sharing its expertise and encouraging the next generation of designers, Monotype reinforces its commitment to preserving the artistic and cultural significance of type design, both in Hong Kong and across the world.
