ZURICH, October 4, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC), a global leader in the development and production of responsible packaging solutions, has been recognized for its AmSky™ And AmPrima™ more sustainable packaging solutions, earning a place on Walmart’s “Circular Connector” platform.
Circular connector, created by retail giant Walmart, is a platform that allows sourcing teams and brands to quickly find more sustainable packaging solutions for the products they put on Walmart shelves. Being able to easily find more sustainable packaging solutions will allow brands, and Walmart, to achieve their sustainability goals while fostering a circular packaging economy.
Endorsed by Walmart’s sustainability leadership team in collaboration with the US Plastics Pact, Amcor’s AmSky and AmPrima recycling-ready packaging solutions are now available to all Walmart suppliers and the public via the Circular Connector .
AmSky offers the world’s first ready-to-recycle blister packaging for pharmaceutical products. Breaking away from standard over-the-counter drug packaging that has been around for decades, AmSky is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and aluminum free – a more responsible choice for the most in-demand type of healthcare packaging. Its carbon footprint is up to 70% lower (compared to PVC/Alu solutions). Based on high density polyethylene (HDPE), it is designed to be recycled in rigid and flexible recycling channels.
AmPrima is a portfolio of recycling-ready packaging solutions with a low carbon footprint, applicable in different packaging formats, from bags to packs and pouches, for solid and liquid contents. It provides options for brands that need packaging that still offers the barrier, material stiffness, seal strength, graphics performance and fast turnaround speeds of traditional non-recyclable packaging. AmPrima, when recycled, offers up to 60% reduction in non-renewable energy consumption compared to equivalent non-recyclable options, provides up to 46% reduction in carbon footprint and an 18% reduction in water consumption. It is designed to be recycled if clean and dry, at existing in-store or curbside drop-offs where available.
Both AmSky and AmPrima were designed with a circular economy in mind, combining fundamental design requirements with end-of-life packaging considerations and innovation.
Suppliers of Walmart’s private label products, particularly in the food, consumables, health and wellness categories, can rest assured that products packaged in the circular connector meet sustainability and innovation standards the strictest. Amcor customers can also have confidence in viable, commercially available packaging options backed by Walmart if they wish to shop with the retailer.
Roawin Luo, Director of Global Product Management at Amcor, expressed her excitement about AmSky and AmPrima being part of the circular connector: “The inclusion of AmSky and AmPrima not only provides options for more sustainable packaging within reach of suppliers and brands aiming for positive change, but also streamlines the process of adopting alternative choices. Our readily available solutions help guide brands looking to embrace sustainability, while fostering a community of stakeholders along the circular value chain journey.
Cheryl Lam, Director of Private Brands for Sustainable Initiatives at Walmart, said: “We leverage Walmart’s Circular Connector to help our suppliers connect with the solutions they want. And Amcor was an early participant with vetted solutions like AmPrima and Amsky. She added, “As a judge for the inaugural US Plastic Pact Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award, I was excited to see Amcor’s AmSky blister included in Walmart’s circular connector. I look forward to seeing AmSky blister packs and AmPrima bags and pouches at my local Walmart in the near future.”
AmSky and AmPrima are the latest innovations from Amcor to be included in the platform, and more will follow as the company progresses on its innovation and sustainability journey.
